WIndow Association of New Zealand 2011 Design Flair Awards
SPECIAL AWARD WINNER
AL-WOOD JOINERY
FOR ST PETER'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, PAHIATUA
Building A Community
Al-Wood Joinery’s work on the St Peters Anglican Church Hall project, won the Special Award in the Window Association of New Zealand’s Design Flair Awards, held in June 2011. “The aim was to create a facility that was attached to the church that would allow large functions to be held and for there to be a functional community hall that could be used by the many groups currently using the old hall,” says Katie Harris, managing director of Al-Wood Joinery. “The windows were large and included a number of floor to ceiling units to make best use of the natural light and were designed with consideration to the many children using the facility.”
Housing local groups and creating a community centre was the aim for both St Peters and Al-Wood. “The character of St Peters and its buildings has been preserved and now caters for groups of all sizes,” says Harris.
The Special Award was the only award of its kind in the recent WANZ Design Flair Awards. “Al-Wood provided the St Peter’s Anglican Church with economical window and door designs that preserve the character of the original church and church hall,” said the judges. Innovative functional thinking on the part of Al-Wood created a front entrance capable of multi-functional use. It just goes to show what aluminium joinery can do sympathetically when put to it.”
